Captain Kirkland’s POV

The slightly musty scent of my study stained the maps around me. Some old, some new. I don’t even know which ones are real and which are just made up.

While my ship quietly sailed towards the foreign ship in the distance, I had decided not to waste perfectly good time and study my maps again. I mean, treasure is what being a pirate is all about, isn’t it?

My emerald eyes scan over the aged maps for perhaps the 10th time and my anticipation slowly builds. The enemy ship isn’t very far now, and although I am one of the most feared pirates on the seven seas, I’m still cautious. I’m not the blood thirsty type, I treat my crew with respect and they are loyal to me. (They have to act like they’re, how you say, hardcore for the sake of our reputation)

I closed my eyes for a few seconds, thinking over what had happened in the last few hours. Everyone was still preparing for the battle, it wouldn’t be the same if we lost one of our members. The cannons were loaded with the old, steel cannonballs and explosive gunpowder and all the crew members, including the cook, were equipped with at least a dagger on them for protection.

A soft knock on the door alerted me that it was time. I stood up abruptly, forcing my chair back, and swiftly walked to the door. As I passed the door frame, I grabbed my captain’s hat and placed it atop my “messy” blonde locks. The soft red, black, and gold fabric was quite comfortable, not to mention the white feather signifying my status.

The sun shone brightly on the deck and there was so much salt in the air you could literally taste it. I raised my head to see the enemy ship only a mile away (is that really far? I’m really bad at estimating). I turned my steady gaze to my loyal crew who was waiting for me, quietly. I grinned slightly, it pays to be ready. I give a curt nod to them to ready the cannons and walk along them, checking their handiwork. Everything seems to be in ship shape (pun intended :D). When I finish checking, I signaled my first mate to take control. He needs to learn how to lead and, frankly, he bugs me when I don’t. My half-brother first mate saluted to me, which I find utterly ridiculous, and eagerly turned to the crew to start.

I sat on an old barrel of gunpowder to watch (it’s not dangerous unless lit), after all, I am the secret weapon.

We neared our enemy ship quickly and my heartbeat quickened. The enemy ship isn’t doing anything, do they have a plan or are they just that stupid?

I heard my first mate call out “ready, aim… fire!” The sound of the worn cannons going off rang in the still air, I watched the cannonballs arc gracefully towards the oncoming ship. They pierced the sails, hull, and deck of the slightly smaller ship.

By now, I was leaning forward, still on my barrel. Adrenalin exploding through my veins at the very sight. I could see the figures of men on the other vessel running around like wild animals. Most of them were not organized, or even sober, as they desperately readied themselves.

“Fire!” Another set of cannonballs whizzed through the open air.

I glanced at my first mate, a burning fire in his crystal blue eyes as he shouted orders. I shook my head sadly. He’s going all offensive, I still have much to teach him. But that has to wait for now.

The opposing ship finally returned fire with a vengeance. Luckily, many of the airborne metal spheres missed my ship. Now the other vessel was close enough for boarding, and I jumped at the chance.

My first mate, a few brave crew members, and I jumped to the lower level ship. I landed solidly on the wooden deck, my coat tails emphasizing my every movement. I grinned wickedly and pulled my sword out of its sheath on my hip. I twirled it skillfully in my nimble fingers and struck a pose just to taunt them. This strategy seemed to work as 3 men charged at me, sword in hand. I dodged the first one and elbowed him hard in the back, making him fall. The second, slightly smarter than the first, whipped his sword at me. I pulled my blade up just in time to block it. The third joined the second, making me frown.

“2 against one? Now that isn’t fair.” Even with the combined forces of the other two, I managed to throw their swords off mine and give them each a swipe on their torso.

I fixed my hat, which had become off placed in my little duel (I can't think of the word) Hmm? This is a small crew. The crew members who had joined me took out all the others and securely tied them to the mast with a rope that was conveniently lying next to it.

I look them over, none of them are the captain. Then I notice some of my men are not here. Suddenly I hear the clashing of swords. I turn to join my shipmate. The captain was your usual generic pirate captain. He wore all dark blue and gold, he was slightly rounder in the mid-section, he had the eye patch, and he had a shaggy, black beard. When he grinned, he showed off his rotting teeth and one golden tooth. He was winning, but only slightly. Then again, that expected from the captain of any ship. I signal for my crew to keep an eye on our hostages over my shoulder and watch the fight from the shadows. The captain’s swordsmanship skills are better than his crew’s, but were still sloppy.

I tapped my sword on the hollow floor, gaining the attention of the fighting men. I jerked my head to the tied up crew and my own. The captain’s jaw dropped and my shipmate joined the rest of my crew.

“So yer the famous Captain Kirkland, aren’tcha?” He replied after recovering from the initial shock. His accent is thick, I thought to myself.

“Why yes, now I highly suggest you surrender. Unless of course, you want to go down with your ship.” I spoke perfect English, I am an Englishman after all.

He snickered, “Like I’d surrender to the likes of ye.”

I furrowed my, slightly (not just slightly ;P) thicker than normal eyebrows. “Fine, we can just tie you to the mast, along with your crew, and sink your ship.” I shot back.

He visibly paled “Err… wait! I… I can give you something.”

I narrowed my eyes at him menacingly. “What kind of something?” I ask, feeling rather curious.

He hesitated, “It’s best if I show you.”

I cocked a brow. “Fine, hand over your weapons.” I stated calmly, my weapon still pointed at him. He placed his sword on the floor, which was quickly joined by a gun. He turned to walk to his cabin but I called out again, “all of your weapons, ‘captain’.”

He gritted his teeth and pulled a dagger from his dark blue coat. He placed it next to his other weapons and started towards his cabin again.

I lowered my sword in wait. What’s he bringing out?

Wooo part 3! So I gotta tell you some stuff before you go. First of all, I decided to make the prologue part one so if you read the prologue and the chapter after that you're right here. Secondly, YOU GUYS ARE KILLING ME!!! A five way tie in my poll!? Really!? *sigh* Alright, so I'll try to upload the next part ASAP (as always). Thanks for reading! And please comment. I want to know what you think! (Positive comments or criticism please) Oh and sorry about the fight/duel scene. I'm still new at this.
